Reflections on Turning Fifty: Finding Freedom and Purpose
Last week, I reached my half-century and celebrated my 50th birthday!
To my delight, friends and family came from all over the country to help me celebrate. It was one of the best weekends of my life!
As I step into the second half of life, I thought I’d share a few reflections on turning fifty.
Shedding Other People’s Expectations
I’ve discovered that one of the most profound gifts on turning fifty is the sudden, liberating feeling of caring less about what people think.
In my twenties I was building a career, in my thirties and forties I was building businesses, and fitting in.
When I turned 49, I made the decision to step away from work and retire begin my future life. This came as a shock to a lot of people, but it was the right decision for me.
Now I’ve turned 50, I feel like my bandwidth for BS has shrunk considerably.
I’ve found that I’m not interested in transactional relationships, shallow conversations or drama. I nurture long-term, loving relationships, am only interested in deep conversations, and distance myself from histrionics.
At 50, you have decades of accumulated wisdom (and mistakes!) to draw upon. Why not choose the path to reinvent yourself when everyone expects you to stay put?
True freedom is realising that you don’t need everyone to like you.
Redefining Ambition for the Second Act
For most of us, the first half of our life is about acquiring. Whether it be job titles, property, possessions or credentials, we are in the constant pursuit of more.
And while I’ve definitely gone through burnout, the second act of my life is not just about rest.
My focus for the second half of my life feels like it is more about curiosity and contribution.
I’m enjoying mentoring people, doing advisory work, and pouring my energy into causes that I feel genuinely matter.
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think my ambition has died on turning fifty. Instead, it’s just been better directed.
Fifty as a Launching Pad
As I look ahead to my next half-century, turning 50 isn’t about looking back with regret, or forward with apprehension.
Turning 50 feels as though I finally have the clarity, freedom and perspective to enjoy all that is to come.
Here’s to the next fifty years! If you’re heading this way too, or already here, let’s make it count. 🙂
