Quieting the Noise: Lessons from Georgina Williams-Hodgson
One of the benefits of relocating to Newcastle-upon-Tyne in the North East of England is that the Toon has a thriving and innovative business community.
I recently had the privilege of hearing Georgina Williams-Hodgson of Nousana speak at the Newcastle Natwest Accelerator Founders Friday event, and I have to say — it was one of the most motivating presentations I’ve attended in a while.
Georgina’s work is inspired by the Theory of Oneness (that everything in the universe is interconnected and part of a single, underlying reality), Quantum Field Theory, and a desire to help others.
If all that sounds too high concept, then Georgina’s presentation explained the practical applications for personal and professional development.
Quieting the Noise
Georgina took us on a journey into what she calls the Noise.
The noise is that inner (and outer) distraction that feeds on stress, fear, scarcity and self-doubt.
Instead of being an abstract theory, Georgina made it practical.
She showed us, clue by clue, how the things we eat, the media we consume, the words we speak and even the way we breathe all play a part in either fuelling the Noise or weakening it.
A few highlights that really stuck with me:
-
Food as fuel for mood – 90% of serotonin is made in the gut, not the brain. That makes nutrition a first-line defence for mental clarity and resilience.
-
Your media diet matters – we’re not just “what we eat,” we’re also what we scroll. Doomscrolling isn’t harmless — studies now link it to increased distress and lower wellbeing.
-
Breath as an override button – something as simple as a longer exhale can directly trigger the vagus nerve and calm the nervous system. Always with you, always accessible.
-
Gratitude as an anchor – recalling a single moment of gratitude and linking it with a simple gesture can re-wire our nervous system to return to calm faster.
What made it so valuable wasn’t just the science (which was fascinating), but the way Georgina gave us tools we could use immediately. She even had us practicing breathing exercises and gratitude anchors right there in the room — and you could feel the energy shift!
Conclusion
For me, the big takeaway was this: the Noise isn’t something “out there” that we’re powerless against. It hides in plain sight, in our routines, our habits, our words. But every time we choose nourishing food, better media, kinder words, or calmer breaths, we weaken it.
A brilliant session, and one I’ll be thinking about — and using — for a long time to come.
